Friday Thoughts: The Quiet Art of Becoming You

Like book lovers scrolling through their bookshelf to find an old favourite they may have already read multiple times but still enjoy returning to, I revisited one of my all-time favourite films, Wake Up Sid (2009). It’s a simple yet meaningful coming-of-age story about personal growth, self-awareness, and the slow process of becoming who you are.

The film follows Sid, a privileged young man in Mumbai who drifts through life without direction or accountability. He has comfort and freedom, but no real sense of purpose. When life gently pushes him out of that comfort zone, he doesn’t transform overnight, instead, he begins a gradual journey of understanding himself.

What makes his story so relatable is that his growth is slow and imperfect. He resists change, makes mistakes, and often feels lost. But through small steps, working, living independently, and discovering photography, he slowly realizes that personal identity is built, not inherited.

Aisha represents clarity and discipline in his journey, but the film is clear about one thing: no one changes Sid except Sid himself. Real growth begins only when he takes ownership of his life.

By the end, Sid is still imperfect, but more aware, responsible, and intentional. His transformation feels real because it is earned, not rushed.

That is why Wake Up Sid remains a soft coming-of-age classic. On a quiet Friday like this, it feels like a gentle reminder that personal growth is not a single moment, but a continuous journey of awareness, reflection, and becoming.
